This rather recent and native Chinese arrival is a woodland groundcover ginger with large, dark green, evergreen, and deer-resistant leaves. Asarum splendens is a vigorously rhizomatous species and makes a dense carpet of green and silver -mottled hearts. In early spring the large, 2-inch, deeply-cupped flowers of dark purple-brown are a unique and exclamation-eliciting bloom when discovered beneath the foliage. (Not culinary; called ginger for its scent when crushed.)
