Astragalus canadensis, Canadian Milkvetch

Upright, clumping perennial that adds texture to garden beds. These perennials send up tall, strong stems with many compound leaves of pale green, each leaflet appears to float - think mimosa tree in a manageable size! In early to mid summer it has long (5-10 inch!) spikes of delicate pea-like flowers in shades of cream to pale green. It looks like a delicate spring ephemeral.

Besides adding beauty, it also increases the nutrients of the surrounding soils by fixing nitrogen, is a host plant for several pollinators, and the flowers and seeds are also food sources for wildlife.

It has a huge native range from all over Canada down to both the southwest and southeast. It prefers full or part sun and well-draining soils, regular summer water, but its wide native range really tells you it can handle many different planting situations. It has a tap root that allows it to grow in tough clay. In totally dry summer climates, expect early transitions to dormancy following the bloom.
