'Midwinter Fire' is admired for its colorful yellow winter stems which are tipped with bright red twigs. It also boasts striking golden yellow fall leaf color.
Though tolerant of a wide range of soils, it is happiest in consistently moist, well-drained soils. To maintain stem color, cut back to the base 25% of the branches every year, or cut back 100% of the branches every third year. If you go with the latter method, you'll sacrifice the not-that-showy blooms the first year.
