Checkered Lilies have exquisite markings of blackish-purple on nodding dusky pinkish-purple bells! You'll see an occasional white bell edged in pink will intermix just to delight. It's best in the woodland garden at the edge of the shade with cool soil during our hot summers. The name, Fritillaria, comes from the Latin, fritillus, meaning "dice-box," presumably referring to the markings on ones such as F. meleagris.
