Native throughout the Western United States, Bitterroot grows on well-drained gravelly soils in dry shrublands. Rosettes of succulent, elongated leaves emerge in early spring. The deep pink (sometimes white) 2-inch flowers follow after the foliage has withered. Prefers afternoon shade; works well to plant on the eastern edge of landscape rocks.
Many Western Native American tribes used Bitterroot as a staple food.
