Evergreen sub-shrub penstemon with small, serrated, deep green, "holly-like" foliage and bright tubular purple-blue flowers in mid-summer. The variety is native to SE Washington, NE Oregon, and into central Idaho.

Alpine penstemons grow best if planted in fall or early spring in sites with excellent drainage and either full sun or at least part sun. They grow oddly if given overly amended, nitrogen-rich soils. If planted directly in the ground, they require very little water once established; the first year, they would appreciate at least a weekly drink once high summer hits. In container, they require more regular water, but it's best given in the early morning or evening as they dislike sudden temperature change.
