Aligned interstellar patterns radiate across large umbrella-shaped leaves. Dark burgundy flowers dangle below leaves (10-12 inches across) amongst thick, hairy stems in springtime. Fall brings small, dark, almost black fruits referred to as Mayapples.
According to their website, the folks at Plant Delights Nursery brought this seedling back from Japan, and it is almost indistinguishable from the patented 'Kaleidoscope' (perhaps a sister seedling?) However, these are natives of China and could be a naturally occurring, unnamed species there.
