Rare! A perennial conversation piece (so to speak) that performs well in cool, moist, shade gardens. Large, chocolate-mottled palmate leaves hide a spectacular flower in April and May — clusters of 5 or more of the deepest red, pendent, "shredded" blooms. It's best elevated in a tall pot, on a pedestal, or on a bank above a walkway so that it's easier to see its sequestered deep red secret of a flower. On the other hand, it is rhizomatous and will need to be in the garden to proliferate, blanketing the bed with its beautiful (if slightly reptilian) pointillism. Lift the leaf and amaze the unsuspecting. 2 – 3 ft tall and wide.
