One of the most iconic Japanese woodland plants, Pteridophyllum is a dual purpose stunner. No one has ever heard of a fern that blooms, but by all appearances, this is as close to it as you can get. Enjoy its ferny foliage year round but also the one foot tall racemes of delicate white bells appear in late spring to early summer. Thought to be in a category all on its own with no plant relatives, it has finally found its home with the poppy family and is sometimes referred to as woodland poppy. It does well on cool, shady northern and eastern slopes with regular water. Protect from slugs.
