A diminutive plant, Sanguisorba officinalis var. microcephala 'Little Angel' is aptly named - sweet, small, and pretty. But it's also fairly tolerant of diverse conditions and its variegation, sprinkled throughout its tiny leaves, remains stable. Red-burgundy flowers, a little larger than a pencil eraser, bob above the foliage like little gems on 8-inch stems beginning in early summer. This is fundamentally an American native, but this version was found by some Dutch plantsmen in a Japanese nursery. So it has come full circle.
