A diminutive plant, Sanguisorba officinalis var. microcephala 'Little Angel' is aptly named—sweet, small, and pretty. But it's also fairly tolerant of diverse conditions and its variegation, sprinkled throughout its tiny leaves, remains stable. Red-burgundy flowers, a little larger than a pencil eraser, bob above the foliage like little gems on 8-inch stems beginning in early summer. This is fundamentally an American native, but this version was found by some Dutch plantsmen in a Japanese nursery. So it has come full circle.
