Undisputed favorite of the Genus when it comes to foliage, Sinningia leucotricha emerges from its dormant tuber with the brightest, fuzziest silver leaves before maturing to a more grey-green. The plant blooms heavily with red-orange tubular flowers that contrast the blue tones of the foliage, especially when new and silvery.
In its native habitat in Parana, Southern Brazil, it's usually found growing as a lithophyte on precipitous cliffs, leading to its name Rainha do Abismo or Queen of the Abyss. Note to North American gardeners, botanists, and horticulturists: we have really lost the drama over here with exciting, evocative names, and need to step it up, particularly when plants so deserve it.
Care: most of us will be growing these as at least part-time houseguests, but according to the Pacific Bulb Society, those in Southern California can grow outdoors. Stop making us jealous. Plant with the tuber or caudex top exposed in sharply draining soil and only water weekly while the plant is actively growing, taper off watering once signs of dormancy appear. Avoid water on the foliage. It would prefer bright light and some humidity. Keep in mind best silver is achieved with more light.
